The 9th graders had Mr. Gross in to teach HTML. What this meant for me was that I spent those three hours walking around the classroom helping students. Some kids really understand the language, but most are really struggling. Hopefully the students will appreciate the importance of spelling and attention to detail because of his lessons.
The 11th graders had difficulty with the quotation response today, especially in 7th hour. I had to threaten that their binders would be graded. Walking around the room eye-balling their notebooks doesn’t seem to be enough. They pull tricks, such as opening their page to something that is already written and pretending that they wrote the quotation response that day. We’ll see how tomorrow goes before I decide to start grading.
We began a section on Native American myths. Today I introduced the assignment for this, gave them groups that I had carefully selected (even though they thought it was random). I then gave a brief introduction on the myths to get them into the mindset of what they would be reading and allowed them to start working. The tasks included answering some questions based on the introduction in the book, and reading two different myths and summarizing them. Most groups did fairly well working together, although I think there was some slacking in group members that I will have to check on.
