Wednesdays are shortened class periods to allow for a resource period between 2nd and 3rd hours and professional development time after school from 2:30 to 3:45.
The shorter periods in English 11 on Wednesdays means mini-lessons. These were developed by Ms. Hogue as part of the Write Move project for juniors. Yesterday’s was proofreading. We updated their handbooks with the symbols and then I had then work on their own to proofread a paragraph handout. After 5-6 minutes, I had them compare with the person sitting next to them. Then we went through it on the overhead as a class. The transparency already had the corrections on it. If I were to do it again, I would create a transparency without the corrections so the students can tell me where to put them. That’s more democratic and they’re then taking more control of their learning. After that, they had time to proofread their letters that are due today. If they didn’t have their letter, I tried to keep them sitting quietly.
In CE9, students were required to write their first CyberJournal. This went well. Most students wrote quite a bit, and for a while all we heard were the keys. Once they finished their journal entry, some had a little bit of time to work on their webpages.
