Amid numerous warnings (or suggestions) during inservice and new teacher orientation about the first days of school, I was able to take those days and make them my own. I followed the guidelines, and realized the importance of setting the right tone for the school year. “Don’t come off too easy” but “Show them you care” were those guiding principles driven home by all staff. Despite some nervousness about setting the right line, there are no horror “first year teacher” stories to post. Setting the classroom environment and expectations went almost flawlessly; the principal happened to catch one of the magic moments when a freshmen group was turning the rules they’ve had to follow in school their entire life into respect, responsibility and reliability. Perfect!
As new staff, the most difficult part is not being useful enough to answer “Where’s the…room?” or “How do I…?” I’ve learned in the last few days, but still don’t have near the information I need to help everybody or even send them to the right person who can help them. If this is the least of my worries after the first days of school, I think we’re going to be fine.
Next on the agenda – continue learning who my students are and how I can reach them in the classroom, and planning, planning, planning!
